ELEVATION 101
Flood hazard mitigation is a process that must begin with the property owner deciding to do the project. Elevation/relocation projects can be self-financed, grant funded or a combination of the two methods. It is important that as many people as possible educate themselves about the processes and that is where the concept of “Elevation 101” came about. The program was field tested in upstate New York after Tropical Storm Lee flooded multiple riverine communities in that region in 2011. A more formalized version was presented to around 4,000 people in person at over 26 venues in New Jersey and New York coastal communities after Super Storm Sandy in 2012-13. The presentation was posted to YouTube from four of the communities and those presentations have resulted in an additional 12,000 viewings.
