John R. Sheaffer Award For Excellence In Floodproofing Recipients
The Association created this award to honor its namesake for his pioneering work in demonstrating floodproofing as a viable flood loss reduction measure and for his decades of work in promoting and advancing the knowledge of these measures. Awards may be presented to a nominated individual, private organization, governmental unit, or governmental agency that has completed work involving a particular project, work, research, design or publication that exhibits the incorporation of accepted procedures, practices and constraints of floodproofing or promotes the field or knowledge of floodproofing by enhancing the awareness and use of new procedures, methods, designs and/or products. The work should have been completed within the calendar year preceding the annual conference. This award is not presented every year. This award recognized Rod’s work after Sandy in the north east.
Rod developed a public education program, sponsored by a leading structural elevation company, titled “Hazard Mitigation – Elevation 101” that was presented 26 times in 6 months to over 4,000 people and has been posted on You Tube by several of the communities with around 12,000 views. The program educates people about flood hazard mitigation – elevation and promoted professional standards and certification for elevation contractors.
